Exhibition of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act

On Monday, April 16, at 1 p.m., the Capitol Visitor Center presents a very special Exhibition Hall talk in recognition of D.C. Emancipation Day.  Join Damini Davis, Archivist at the National Archives, as he talks about the District of Columbia Emancipation Act passed by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1862.  Meet at the entrance to Exhibition Hall of the Visitor Center's lower leel for this 15 -minute program. No reservations or passes required.

   In recognition of the legislation passed to abolish slavery in Washington, DC on April 16, 1862, a program will be held to highlight the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans in Washington, DC.  Part of the Howard University Lecture Series.

Triumph of Freedom: DC Emancipation Day

This DC Emancipation Commemoration Lecture Program presented by the National Park Service in collaboration with the Office of Councilmember VIncent Orange and DC Reading is Fundamental, Inc., features historian of the African diaspora,  C.R. Gibbs.  The lecture program, with a documentary film, remembers those who advocated for and abolished slavery; who fought for freedom in the U.S. Civil War Union Forces; and enslaved persons freed.  Tours of the Frederick Douglass home will follow the 2 -hour program.

The District of Columbia hosts a parade in honor the signing of the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of April 16, 1862, which freed 3,100 enslaved persons and ended slavery in the District.

DC Emancipation Day 150th Anniversary Jazz and Comedy Concert featuring Dick Gregory,  Brian Lenair and the West Virginia State University Jazz Band.  A pre-concert reception will be held from 6:15pm to 7:00pm

The BET Great Debate

Black Entertainment Television sponsors the Great Debate featuring host C.B. Homes.  Invited participants include Rev. Al Sharpton and Michael Eric Dyson.

The DC Emancipation Day 150th Anniversary Concert

The reknown West Virginia State University Jazz Band   and the Howard Univeristy Choir comemmorate the sesquicentennial anniversary of DC Emancipation Day with a celebration in music.  A pre-concert reception will be held in the theater lobby from 6:15pm  to 7:00pm.
