The National Park Service presents “Experience Emancipation Day Where it All Began … Lincoln Park”
The past and the present come together at Lincoln Park on April 16 with the celebration of Emancipation Day. The program includes activities for families and children, a recreation of Frederick Douglass’s epic Emancipation Day speech and the unveiling of the historic Emancipation Group statue. The program gives visitors an appreciation of the meaning of Emancipation Day and highlights the importance of city parks like Lincoln Park to city life.

Wreath Laying Ceremony
Peter Hanes, Reading Is Fundamental, Dr. Frank Smith, the African American Civil War Museum will conduct a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the memorial in honor of the African American Colored Troops and Sailors in served in the cause for freedom. Immediately following, Dr. Frank Smith will lead a “calling of the names” of the 209,145 USCT who served.

The Lincoln Group – Dr. John T. Elliff, president of the Lincoln Group will speak on “Lincoln’s Role as Illinois Legislator, Congressman, and President.” John O’Brien, Vice President of the Lincoln Group, will discuss “Washington’s Role in the American Year of Jubilee.”
