Dr. David T. Terry, former Curator of the Reginald Lewis Museum, Assist. Professor of Museum Studies and African American History at Morgan State Univ., will lecture on his contribution to the book First Freed edited by Dr. Elizabeth Clark-Lewis entitled: “A Brief Moment in the Sun – The Aftermath of Emancipation in Washington, DC 1862 - 1869."

Public Forum on the New DC Archives

The Bowser Administration and Secretary of DC Lauren C Vaughan will host A Public Forum on the New DC Archives. The Secretary of the District of Columbia, in cooperation with the Friends of the DC Archives, is convening a forum to garner public input and ensure that the residents of the District of Columbia have an opportunity to learn about and understand the importance of protecting and preserving DC’s valuable historical documents and artifacts.

Emancipation Day 2016 Fireworks Display

A “must-see”, impressive display of fireworks will light up the night’s sky, signaling the explosive formal ending of all official celebrations. The Fireworks Finale will take place at Freedom Plaza, and begins shortly after the concert ends. All are encouraged and invited to catch the entertaining finale and all official celebrations.

Be sure to catch the official Emancipation Day concert! Featured performers include Eric Benet, Maysa, Raheem DeVaughn, Doug E. Fresh, Mali Music, Familiar Faces, Black Alley Band and Brian Lenair. This year’s free concert is from 4:30 to 8:30 pm and concludes with an impressive fireworks display, all at Freedom Plaza.
