Part of the Howard University Lecture Series, this Emancipation Day program focuses on a holistic approach to healing the scars of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, oppression and discrimination through good health, positive image awareness, economic and political empowerment, and a clear understanding of emancipation in the struggle for freedom, liberty, justice and equality.
The Mayor will announce the kickoff of Emancipation Day year-long activities and events to celebrate the sesquicentennial commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act that freed 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia. The announcement will highlight commemoration of Emancipation Day with a wide variety of activities hosted by the District government and its partners.
In conjunction with the District of Columbia, Georgetown University presents a program commemorating the Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary of President Lincoln's signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act of April 16, 1862, which freed 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia nine months before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
